To detect cancer early, it is important to participate in screenings, as this allows for timely treatment, reduces mortality from the disease, and improves the quality of life for patients.

In Estonia, women aged 50–69 are invited for breast cancer screening every two years.

Mammography is the most common breast examination, aiming to diagnose and detect breast diseases in women. It is primarily indicated for women over 35 years of age.

Screening patients can register for the examination by calling 666 1900 or on the Health Portal www.terviseportaal.ee.

The examination takes place at the Magdaleena unit, Pärnu mnt 104.

The screening is free for patients (including uninsured patients).

The examination is performed with a special X-ray machine. X-rays are used to create a mammography image, or mammogram. The radiation dose received from the examination is very small and does not harm a woman’s health.

We welcome you for mammography even if you have no complaints but wish to have your breasts checked.

When registering by email, please include your personal identification code, contact number, and a brief description of your complaint. On average, 160 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in Estonia each year.

Human papillomavirus, or HPV, is a virus whose high-risk strains can cause changes in cervical cells. Persistent infection with a specific HPV type can lead to cervical cancer. HPV types 16 and 18 carry the highest cancer risk. HPV is transmitted sexually.

Women aged 30–65 are invited for cervical cancer screening every 5 years with an invitation from the Health Insurance Fund.

The screening is also free for all uninsured women. You do not need to wait for an invitation to register for the screening. A midwife conducts the screening.

To detect and prevent cervical cancer or its pre-cancerous conditions early, a sample is taken from the cervix for HPV testing during the screening. Screening results will be visible in the digital health record within 4 weeks at the latest.

If the HPV test result is negative, further cervical monitoring will proceed according to the national screening plan, typically with an HPV test every 5 years.

If the HPV test result is positive, a liquid-based gynecological cytological examination (LBC-based Pap test) will also be performed from the same sample material.

If the Pap test is normal, you will be called back in a year for a new HPV test. If the Pap test is pathological, a colposcopy is necessary. These additional examinations are also free, even if you do not have health insurance.

You will be contacted within 1 month, and if necessary, further examinations and a treatment plan will be arranged. Results and the medical summary will also be visible in the digital health record.

The screening is free for patients (including uninsured patients).

You can read more information about cervical cancer screenings from the Health Insurance Fund’s website.

Note!
